William J. Gano, age 77, of Newcomerstown, peacefully passed away on October 4, 2026 at Oakpointe Nursing Center in Baltic, Ohio.
Bill was born on December 26, 1948, in Coshocton, to the late Minnie (Spristerbaugh) and Carl H. Gano. Following his graduation from Newcomerstown High School in 1966, he began his working career as an apprentice for Warner and Swasey. He then honorably served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. Following his military service, he worked as a machinist at Hercules Engines in Canton, as well as the Gradall and Timken Companies in New Philadelphia. Bill was a member of Jerusalem Church in New Philadelphia and the Newcomerstown American Legion.
Bill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty J. (Lorenz) Gano; his son, Andrew (Beth) and daughter, Abby; grandchildren, Emily, Andrea (Hayden), and Andrew; great grandsons, Jesse and Jayveon all of Newcomerstown; brothers, Lonnie (Cheryl) of Coshocton, Richard (Evelyn) and Lyman of Newcomerstown, Robert (June) and Forrest (Nanette) of Kimbolton; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Gano.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl and James.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Oakpointe Nursing Center in Baltic for the loving care and kindness they provided for Bill in his final days. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover on Friday, October 9, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A service celebrating Bill’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Dr. Tom Hendershot. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Stone Creek Cemetery.
