It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Warren Welz of Montgomery, TX (formerly of Strasburg, OH), who left this world for his eternal rest on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Herman Memorial Hospital in The Woodlands, TX. He was 74 years old.
Warren was born on May 24, 1951, in Dover, OH, to Otto Warren and Kathryn Klein Welz, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Randolph Hamel and Charles Reymond.
A 1969 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Warren went on to a long and dedicated career in the diesel service industry. He began his career with Ray C. Call Detroit Diesel in Strasburg, OH, starting as a Parts Runner. Later, he moved up to
become the Parts Manager at the company’s Canton, OH location after it was acquired by Western Branch Diesel. Warren devoted over 40 years to the company, retiring in 2017.
Warren proudly served in the Ohio National Guard for six years. Throughout his life, he remained deeply committed to his faith and community. He served as a custodian and usher at St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg, OH, and was an active volunteer in Habitat for Humanity mission trips. Warren was also a member of the Charles Hofa Post #552 American Legion in Strasburg.
In his retirement, Warren found joy in spending time with his family and continuing his service to others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Saltz Welz; two daughters, Kari (Tim) Johnson of Montgomery, TX, and Kelly (Corey) Jones of Canton, OH; grandchildren Sara Johnson of Roanoke, TX; Matthew Johnson of Irving, TX; Dakota Jones of Canton, OH;
Chloe Jones of Norton, OH, and his great-granddaughter, Ellie Horinger of Norton, OH. He is also survived by his two sisters, Judy Hamel of Syracuse, NY, and Joan (Dave) Schroeder of Dover, OH, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Warren’s kindness, humility, and dedication to his family, faith, and community will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 16th, 2026 at St. John United Church of Christ, 516 N Wooster Ave., Strasburg, OH 44680 at 1:00 pm. Visitors will be received at 12:30. The Honor Guard of the Charles Hofa Post #552 American Legion will honor Warren following the service outside the church with a military salute.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. John United Church of Christ of Strasburg, OH to support the ongoing work of the church.
