Susan S. (Hanhart) Hoopingarner, 68, of New Philadelphia and a former Dover resident died Monday, Feb. 6, 2023 in the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital following a brief illness.
Born April 1, 1954 in Dover, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Richard M. and Mary (Scott) Hanhart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother in-law, Dallas and Josephine Hoopingarner and cousin, Hope Burkey.
Susan was a former special education teacher having taught in the Dover and Pandora-Gilboa School Systems.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Philadelphia and served many years on the board of T-4-C and was involved in the Share A Christmas Program. She also served as Secretary of the Sailing Buckeyes Yacht Club and member of the Atwood Yacht Club. She was a 1972 graduate of Dover High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Wittenberg University where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Her primary focus in life revolved around being a loving Nana to her four grandsons. In her earlier years, Sue was active in the PTG school organizations.
She will be sadly missed by her family that include her husband of 46 years John Hoopingarner and were married on July 17, 1976; two children, Scott (wife, Abigail) Hoopingarner of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Katie (husband, Kyle) Mears of Circleville, Ohio and grandchildren Dylan and Blake Hoopingarner and Jackson and Cohen Mears; two brothers, Dave (Trudy) Hanhart of Dover and Scott (Cara) Hanhart of Dublin, Ohio; a special cousin, Kay (Mack) Bambeck of Dover and many nieces and nephews and can’t forget her canine companion, Buddy.
Susan’s family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 from 5-8pm at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday Feb. 10 at 10:30am in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Philadelphia with cremation to follow.
