Shirley Ann Phillabaum, 88, of Dover, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Born on February 23, 1938, in Roswell, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Carroll) Dillon.
Shirley was a loving, caring, and dependable woman with a thoughtful heart and a spirited personality. She had a feisty side and wasn't afraid to speak her mind, but beneath that strong-willed exterior was someone who cared deeply for those around her. She had a little bit of everything in her personality, and that was part of what made her so special. Shirley enjoyed life's simple pleasures and was happiest when keeping herself busy. Whether she was cleaning, tending to her yard, or painting, she always found something to do. She also loved to whistle, sing, and dance, bringing a little music and joy into everyday moments. Sharing her love of music with her sister Carolyn, the two sang with local bands, and Shirley even had the opportunity to perform at Mickey Gilley's. Shirley also loved to shop and especially looked forward to her shopping trips with her daughter, Christian. With a sense of humor all her own, she affectionately referred to their outings as their "Thelma and Louise" adventures, a special tradition that will always be remembered with a smile.
Above all, Shirley loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She treasured the time spent with them, whether it was a trip to the park, an afternoon at the pool, or simply enjoying their company. These special moments created memories that her family will carry with them for years to come.
Shirley's unwavering faith was at the heart of who she was. Her love for the Lord was a constant throughout her life, and not for one second did she lose that faith. She found a special place of belonging at Community Baptist Church in Dover, Ohio, where her faith continued to be an important part of her life. She also enjoyed attending Women's Aglow Fellowship, where she formed many wonderful friendships with women who shared her love for the Lord. Through life's joys and challenges, her faith remained steadfast, a beautiful testament to the strength and spirit of the woman she was.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Phillabaum, who passed away on July 24, 2019; her parents, John and Elsie (Carroll) Dillon; and her siblings, Jean Petrullo, Ronnie Dillon, and Carolyn Chaney. She leaves behind her five children, Jaime Cole Mansfield, Marla (CJ) Cole, Tim (Teri) Cole, Christian Morris, and Lena (Larry) Minnis; two stepchildren, Larry (Erin) Phillabaum II and Lorie Phillabaum; and a very special niece, Julie Papaleo, whomshe loved and cherished like a daughter. She is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren, Lola Lambert, James Cole- Dague, Timothy Cole, Seth Lash, Kendall Minnis, Katrina Minnis, Cassie Hill, Garr Phillabaum, Nathan Vickers, Dalton Phillabaum, Cody Swoveland, Jacob John, and Whitney Phillabaum; and great-grandchild, Aden Lambert.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hennis Care Centre of Dover and Crossroads Hospice for the care, kindness, and compassion shown to Shirley during her final journey. Their dedication and support brought comfort during a difficult time and will always be remembered with sincere appreciation.
In a final act of generosity, Shirley chose to donate her body to the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine to contribute to the education of future medical professionals. Cremation will follow, with a private interment to be held at a later date for immediate family.
