Seth M. Schatzel

Seth Schatzel, age 46, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 1, 2026 following an apparent heart attack..

Born on June 17, 1980, Seth was the son of Ernie (Bev) Schatzel and the late Debra Schatzel, who passed away in 2004 and was most certainly awaiting his arrival with open arms in heaven.

Seth graduated from Garaway High School in 1998 and began working for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad soon after graduation. He spent the past 28 years with the company. A devoted and hard worker, he often put in sixty-plus-hour workweeks—a trait instilled in him as a child by his father.

Seth’s greatest characteristic, however, was his huge, loving, and compassionate heart, which he inherited from his mother. He was so proud to be a father. His son Gabriel, age 16, was the light of his life. Gabriel will greatly miss Seth’s love, guidance, and golfing knowledge. Seth will also be greatly missed at all Schatzel family gatherings, where he always made things so much more interesting.

Seth lived life to the fullest and was always the loudest voice in the room. He had a huge network of friends from his time spent throwing darts, golfing, fishing, hunting, and camping. Every person who spent time with Seth has a great story to tell about him.

Seth loved to throw darts and was exceptionally skilled, winning countless tournaments and competitions. He was well known and adored in the darting community as a member of the Akron Canton Dart Club. He competed annually in tournaments in the Akron/Canton area, Youngstown, and Pittsburgh, and will be missed by so many of his dart friends and family.

Seth was also a very good golfer. He enjoyed his annual trip to Santee, South Carolina, with his group of golf buddies and was proud to golf with his best friend Luke each year in the Shady Hollow Country Club Member/Guest tournament. He also enjoyed playing golf on Sunday mornings with his dad when time allowed. Seth spent his entire life in Dundee and was a Dundee boy to his core. His passion for the outdoors was infectious. He loved spending time on a boat fishing with family and friends, and he devoted many long hours to scouting, planting food plots, and hunting whitetail deer. He was fortunate enough to harvest a 15-point double drop-tine buck—the buck of a lifetime for nearly any hunter. Seth is survived by his father, Ernie (Bev) Schatzel; son, Gabriel; brother, Jason (Tia) Schatzel; stepbrother, James (Dana) Dawson; nephews Brandon (Lydia) Schatzel, Preston (Bri Beitzel) Schatzel, and Kale Dawson; nieces Bailey (Justin Kieffer) Schatzel and Kayne Dawson; great-nieces Paisley Schatzel and Kaylee Stoll; great-nephew Ryder Schatzel; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his mother, Debra Schatzel, Seth was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Galen and Edith Maurer; Ernest Schatzel Sr. and Ruth Marino.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6th starting at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Strasburg with Pastor Dan Legg officiating. Interment will be at the Dundee Cemetery. The family will be greeting friends at the Strasburg funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
