Samuel Lawrence “Larry” Miceli, 82 of Los Angeles, was received into the Lord’s arms on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at Argento Memory Care after an extended illness. He had been surrounded by his family’s love and care in the days and hours leading up to his passing.
Larry was born on November 1, 1943, in Weirton, West Virginia, the eldest child of the late Samuel and Agnes (Krayzel) Miceli. He grew up in Dover, Ohio, where he played football in high school. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business from the College of Steubenville. After graduation, Larry began his career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he met the love of his life, Frances Lampo. After a brief courtship (he asked her to marry him on their first date!) they married in 1971. Soon after, a promotion brought them to New Jersey, where they made their home for 44 years, most of them in Brielle. Fran and Larry were inseparable. Whether sharing a meal, gathering with friends, or simply enjoying each other’s company, they did everything in life together for 55 wonderful years. Humor and mutual adoration defined their marriage and life-time partnership. In 1977, following the loss of their first child, Paul, the year before, Larry and Fran welcomed their daughter, Marybeth. Larry adored her and was a devoted husband and father who helped run the household while working full time, long before it was common to do so. Larry and Marybeth were close, sometimes even acting more like siblings rather than father and daughter. He would always make her laugh. Larry loved watching her in plays, playing sports, and watching her make music. But nothing brought him more joy than being “Pop-Pop” to his grandchildren, Sammy and Mary Leigh. He doted on them and goofed around with them whenever he had the chance. Professionally, Larry’s career took him to some of the country’s best-known retailers, working in the management team at Woolworth’s, Radio Shack, Toys “R” Us, and GNC, as well as serving on the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce. In the 1990s, he worked as the marketing manager for the U.S. Navy Exchange, Navy Lodge Program establishing Navy Lodges around the world, most notably in Nagasaki, Japan. After retiring from the Navy, he worked alongside dear friends, first in the accounting department of Jim and Carol Noe’s construction firm, and later at Linda and Ray Kondler’s accounting firm in New Jersey.
Larry was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook who loved entertaining and throwing a good party. He loved cooking pasta sauce on Sunday afternoons while listening to classical music or 50s and 60s music. Later in life, Larry discovered a love for making art and life was never the same. He painted everything from enormous floral pieces, to a villa in Italy where the family had vacationed, to a “family-famous” piece of Sammy at the laundromat. After moving to LA, he loved to paint with Mary Leigh out on the apartment patio. Though in later years, he had to move on to coloring, his passion for making prolific art never left him. Above all, he was funny. His quick wit and easy laughter made him beloved by everyone he met, and he collected friends wherever he went. Even through his long battle with dementia, his sense of humor stayed with him to the very end.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Agnes Miceli; his son, Paul Miceli; his sister, Cathleen Bambeck; and his brother, Bruce Miceli.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Frances (Lampo) Miceli; his daughter, Marybeth Miceli Newton and her husband, Damien; his grandchildren, Sammy Newton and Mary Leigh Newton and many beloved nieces and nephews. His humor, his laughter, and the way he lit up a room will be sorely missed.
A funeral & memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s ELCA Church (11555 NationalBlvd., Los Angeles, CA) on November 28, 2026 at 3pm, dinner to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry’s memory to St. Andrew’s ELCAChurch.
