Robert F. Schenk

Robert Frederick Schenk, age 75, of Strasburg, Ohio, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born April 3, 1951, in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late John and Betty (McGonigal) Schenk. He was also preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Dorothy (Shetler) Smith McCulley and Dr. Robert McCulley, and Isaac W. Smith

Bob graduated from Dover High School in 1969, and attended Kent State University, where he was present on campus during the May 4, 1970, shootings. Bob began working at McIntosh Oil in 1972 alongside his uncle, Sam Schenk, and eventually became the owner of the business. He dedicated more than 50 years to McIntosh Oil, continuing to work until his health forced him to retire. It gave Bob great peace knowing his family will continue to carry on the legacy of McIntosh Oil. In his younger years, Bob enjoyed playing in many bands and maintained a lifelong passion for music. He loved to travel, visiting destinations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Some of his favorite family vacations included trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Kiawah Island in the Charleston area. Bob also enjoyed skiing, an activity he did with the whole family. He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren and loved attending their many activities and events, including baseball, basketball, golf, go-karting, racing, tennis, lacrosse, cheerleading and piano recitals. He also enjoyed giving back to the community and coached Little League baseball with Marcus. Bob was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Strasburg. He lived life to the fullest, treasured his family, and was happiest when surrounded by the people and activities he loved.

Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet Smith Schenk whom he married on June 29, 1974; daughter, Melanie (Matt) Neidenthal of Strasburg; son, Marcus Malcuit of Strasburg; grandchildren, Matthew (Cortney) Neidenthal, Mike Neidenthal, Mitch Neidenthal, Ava Malcuit, and Isaac Malcuit; great-grandson, Nash Neidenthal; sister, Sally (Steve) Doege of Canton; sister-in-law, Joan Smith of Florida; and many nieces, including Lori (Jay) Stapp, Bridgette (James) Daly, and Melissa (Scott) Hughes.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 15th starting at 11:00 am in the First Lutheran Church at Strasburg with Rev. Emily Crilley officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. The family will be greeting friends in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Strasburg on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

The family is deeply blessed and thankful for the wonderful care Bob received from the Care Team Hospice. They express their sincere appreciation to the entire Care Team Hospice staff, who were kind, compassionate, and “awesome” throughout his care.
