Richard L. "Dick" O'Brien, 86, of Dover passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025 in the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.
Born May 25, 1938 in Hornell, New York he was a son of the late Richard and Kathryn Keiff O'Brien. He was also preceded in death by a son, William O'Brien and a sister, Kathleen Decker.
Dick dedicated more than 20 years of his life to the United States Air Force, retiring in 1977. His commitment to service did not end with his military career; he went on to serve his local community as a letter carrier at the United States Post Office in New Philadelphia for 20 years. Additionally, Dick worked as a bagger at Buehler's in Dover and delivering flowers for the flower shop. He also owned and operated O'Brien's Tavern in Midvale, where he became a familiar face in the community. Dick was a deeply religious man. He read his Bible daily and attended the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia, as well as Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church. His faith guided him and enhanced his loving and outgoing personality, making him someone who enjoyed helping others and building connections with them.
Dick's interests included playing pool, where he became well-known for his impressive skills. He was also an avid bowler, participating in a league at Boulevard Lanes, where he forged many friendships. Gardening was another passion of his; Dick took great pride in his yard and landscaping, creating a beautiful space for family and friends to enjoy. Music held a special place in Dick’s heart. He was very musical and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. He had a particular fondness for Country, Blue Grass, and Gospel music.
Dick is survived by his children, Kim Devlinger of Illinois, Bridget (Chad) Rider of Illinois, Michelle (Bob) Devney of New Philadelphia, Theresa (Chris) Cannon of Georgia, Richard (Lettie) O'Brien of California, Victoria Cole of Byesville, and Elizabeth Thompson of New Philadelphia; siblings, Laurie O'Brien, Kevin O'Brien, and Kerry (Betsy) O'Brien, all of New York. His legacy continues through his 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17th starting at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Jeffrey Gerber officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services. The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
