Richard L. “Flick” Flickinger, age 77, of Strasburg, passed away Monday, August 21, 2017, in Community Hospice’s Truman House, following a brief illness.
Born March 21, 1940, in Dover, he was a son of the late Roy and Ada Hanni Flickinger. He graduated from Strasburg-Franklin High School in 1958, and was employed by AK Steel (Empire-Detroit), Flick’s Drilling and Flickinger Piping Co. (from which he retired), all of Dover.
The true joy of Flick’s life was his family - especially his grandchildren - he enjoyed watching them grow up, attending their school functions and sporting events, and generally spoiling them.
Flick was a member of Strasburg’s First Lutheran Church, Shady Rest Army-Navy Garrison, Beach City, and the Dover Moose Lodge. He served for many years with the Strasburg Fire Department. Flick never met a stranger, and was fond of time spent with his many special friends.
Survivors include his loving wife, Gail Gibson Flickinger, whom he married on May 25, 1994; his sons, Steve Flickinger of Madisonville, Tennessee, Joel (Michelle) Flickinger of Navarre, and Rich (Carolyn) Flickinger of Santa Fe, Texas; his daughter, Emily (Brock) Lauvray of Strasburg; his grandchildren, Steven, Royce, Lacey, Jeanette, Lexi and Sadie Flickinger, Jeffrey and Matthew Harmon, and Liv Lauvray; his great-grandchildren, Madison, Ryker, Remi, Rylee and Avery Harmon; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruthann “Harv” Flickinger, Walter and Ruth Gibson, Paula Leutch and Jill Antlek; and his nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Flick was preceded in death by his wife, Larna Welling Flickinger, in 1988; and his brothers, Alvin, Charles, Wayne and Gene Flickinger.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday (today), August 23, at 6 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home Wednesday, 3 – 6 p.m. To sign an online guestbook and share a fond memory of Flick, please visit to obituaries link on the Toland-Herzig website.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Flick’s memory be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
