Mary R. Schaar

Mary R. Schaar, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on September 7, 2023, in her hometown of Dover. 

She was born on March 21, 1940, to Albert Bair and Margaret (Tomer) Bair. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Tommy Thompson; and her brothers, Robert and Charles Bair.  

Mary had a strong work ethic and dedicated her life to the family farm. She actively participated in every aspect of farm life, including butchering, baling hay, canning, gardening, and cooking. Her hard work and passion for farm life were an inspiration to all who knew her.

After completing her education at Dover High School, Mary continued to contribute to her community. She was an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover. She was particularly involved with the Golden Oldies group and served as a leader within the organization. Through her involvement in the church, Mary formed lifelong friendships and made a positive impact on many lives.

Mary's proudest accomplishment was her nurturing family whom she cherished deeply. She is survived by her loving husband, whom she married on January 8, 1960, John Schaar Sr., their children; Patricia Thompson, and Brenda (Jerry) Goehring, and their son John (Melanie) Schaar Jr..

Mary adored spending time with her grandchildren: Ben, Jeremy, Shelby, John III, Kendall, and Katie; they brought immense joy into her life. Additionally, she was blessed with five great-grandchildren who brightened her days.

Visitation services will be held on September 11, 2023 at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover from 5 pm to 7 pm. Mary's Funeral Service will take place the following day, September 12th, at 11 a.m. also at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover. Burial will follow immediately after at Dover Burial Park. A reception will be held at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center following the service.
