Lynda Sue Westhafer

Lynda Sue Westhafer, age 80, of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2025, in Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, and passion, particularly in the field of education.

Born on July 15, 1945, in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Donald D. "Diz" and Nadine O. "Deany" (Click) Halter. Lynda Sue was a proud graduate of New Philadelphia High School, where her academic journey began. She furthered her education at Kent State University, earning a bachelor's degree in education, and later continued her pursuit of knowledge, studying at both Kent State and Xavier Universities, obtaining her master's degree. Lynda Sue married Phillip D. "Phil" Westhafer, who survives, on July 30, 1977.

For over 30 years, Lynda Sue devoted her life to teaching, significantly impacting the lives of her students at Indian Valley North and Indian Valley Schools, and later worked as a substitute teacher. Strong and direct in her approach, she was a mentor who deeply cared for the children in her classroom. She was recognized for her excellence in teaching and was presented with the prestigious Martha Holden Jennings Award. Lynda Sue was a member of the Indian Valley Education Association, serving as president. Her commitment to education was evident not only in her professional achievements but also in the relationships she built with her students and colleagues alike.

Lynda Sue had many interests that enriched her life beyond the classroom. She enjoyed embroidery and needlepoint and was an active member of the Embroidery Guild of America, where she served as treasurer. Together with her husband, Phil, she shared a passion for antique automobiles as members of the Antique Automobile Club of America. She also belonged to the Tuscarawas County Coin Club. Lynda Sue explored new interests with enthusiasm.

Traveling was one of Lynda Sue’s joys, taking her to many historical sites across the United States, as well as trips to Florida and vacations to Topsail Island in North Carolina. Merry and Keith Pretorius were special friends and traveling companions. A favorite destination closer to home was Castle Noel in Medina. In her youth, Lynda Sue was fond of camping and still enjoyed campfires.

In addition to her loving husband, Phil, she is survived by her children, Roy (Kelly) Demattio, Marcy (Kevin) Friend, Tammy (Tracy) Gorman, Kelly (Tom) Trachsel, and Connie (Kevin) Hendrix; her grandchildren, Maddie (Sachin) Sunny, Cade and Brittany Demattio, Brittany and Doug Whitehair, Seth (Taylor) and Kyle (Ashley) Gorman, Rashelle (Wyatt) Harding, Marissa Eckert, Jason (Nicole) and Andrew (Brienna) Hoover; her great-grandchildren, Apollo, Amelia, Aubrey, Kadyn, Emma, McKenna, Jesse, and Grayson; her brother and sister, Tim (Jacque) Halter and Jennifer (Douglas) Miller; her nieces, nephews, and cousins; and good friends, Peg Pringle and Peg's son, Larry Pringle.

Besides her parents, Lynda Sue was preceded in death by her beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Cremation is under the care and direction of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. It was Lynda Sue's wish that there be no public visitation or ceremony. Her family and close friends will celebrate her life privately in the near future.

It is suggested that contributions in honor of Lynda Sue be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lynda Sue Westhafer lived a good, full life, enriched by her accomplishments, friendships, and love for the world around her. She will be remembered as an influential educator, a loving partner, and a passionate traveler. Her legacy will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched throughout her life's journey.
