Leon H. Smith

December 6, 1946 — March 11, 2026

Beach City

Leon Smith, age 79, of Beach City, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Born on December 6, 1946, in Richwood, West Virginia, Leon was the son of the late Herbert and Gloria (Russell) Smith. He graduated in 1965 from Hiland High School.

On November 5, 1966, he married Evelyn Longfellow, sharing nearly sixty years of marriage. The couple has two daughters, Kathy and Laura, and Leon will be remembered as an incredibly devoted father and family man, even selling his guns to buy bikes for his girls. The family spent many summers camping, creating many cherished memories. He was selfless and giving; a kind neighbor that spent many winters plowing snow and summers mowing lawns for many around town.

Leon was a proud patriot, and served in the National Guard for six years. He was present during the Kent State conflict on May 4, 1970, and was one of only eight fellow guardsmen that participated in the federal trials. He proudly served for 50 years with the Beach City American Legion following his service.

Leon was a natural mechanic that loved old cars and engines, even building a Jeep from the frame up. His mechanical knowledge led him to owning and operating his own trucking company. While driving trucks, Leon served as a Beach City police officer for ten years. Leon retired from Fenton Brother’s Electric after 20 years of service to the company.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, and daughters, Kathy (Donnie) and Laura, Leon is survived by his sister, Linda (Dwain); brother, Jeff (Tammy); aunt, Pat; and numerous cousins. His granddaughter, Amanda, and beloved dog, JoJo, preceded him in death.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover.  A memorial service honoring Leon’s life will be held at St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg on Thursday, March 19, 2026, with Pastor Jason Rissler officiating. The family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00, with a service beginning at 12:00. Interment will follow at South Lawn Cemetery in Beach City. The family will be hosting a meal at the church following the committal as a time of fellowship. Memorial contributions in Leon’s name may be made to the St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg. To sign an online guestbook for Leon, please visit the funeral home’s website.
