Kendall Dwaine Matthus

March 13, 1944 — July 27, 2025

Mineral City, Ohio

Kendall Dwaine Matthus, age 81, of Mineral City, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Hennis Care Centre, Dover, with his loving family at his side.

Born March 13, 1944, in Dennison, he was the son of the late Karl and Evelyn (Helter) Matthus. Kendall attended elementary school in Bowerston before his family moved to Dover, where he graduated from Dover High School in 1962. He was employed for 37 years by Quimby Material Handling in North Canton. After the company closed, he found new purpose at Nickles Bakery in Navarre, from which he retired. His professional journey was marked by loyalty and dedication.

Kendall married the former Penny Jean Beal on December 27, 1999; the couple had been together since 1987. Sadly, Penny passed away from COVID on January 4, 2021.

Kendall was known as a quiet and private individual. Though he preferred listening to speaking, when he did share his thoughts, they resonated with those around him. He maintained a tidy home and took care to ensure his automobiles were in top shape. His love for family and friends was evident in memories created during their visits. Each evening, he would reach out to family members, ending every conversation with a heartfelt, "I love you."

He closely followed Ohio State football and the Cleveland Browns, and was also a boxing and UFC enthusiast. Kendall savored a good meal, with steak and potatoes topping his list of favorites. He had a particular fondness for desserts, especially pumpkin pie. An interesting fact about Kendall was that he collected Elvis memorabilia. He was also an adept dancer, winning several contests with his twist moves, showcasing a vibrant side of his character.

Kendall leaves behind a legacy of love and respect for family and friends. His presence will be sorely missed, but his memory will live on through the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children, Kendra (Tod) Crilley of Mineral City, and Kendall “Kenny” Matthus of New Philadelphia; his eight grandchildren; his 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Wyladean Bitikofer; his brother, Karl (Brenda) Matthus; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Penny, Kendall was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine (Ermil) Gadd; and his brother-in-law, Bob Bitikofer.

Kendall will be cremated through the care of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. A graveside service will be held, the date and time of which will be announced on this website.
