John S. Shonk, 76, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, August 3, 2003 in Union Hospital after a brief illness.
He retired n 1990 from Ravens at Dover where he had worked for 27 years as a mechanic.
Born June 25, 1927 at Strasburg, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Lint Shonk.
John was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and served as a photographer during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Midvale VFW where he had served as Chaplain for many years on the squad�(TM)s funeral detail, and had been a longtime member of the Sugarcreek post of the American Legion.
He had fun in everything that he took part in especially in his time spent at the Sugar Hill Sportsman�(TM)s Club and with the Southside, New Philadelphia chapter of the Tuscarawas County AARP. John was also a big racing fan and had followed the local racing scene for decades.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Bair Shonk, who died October 10, 1978.
Survivors include: four sons; Paul (Pam) Shonk of New Philadelphia, Jerald (Theresa) Shonk of Gnadenhutten, Jack (Leanne) Shonk of Massillon, and John P. Shonk of New Philadelphia, a daughter-in-law; Holly Shonk of Dover, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three sisters.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a son, a brother, five sisters and a grandchild.
A service celebrating John�(TM)s life will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover with Pastors John and David Fouts officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover. Following the burial, a reception will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
Friends may call in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m.
