Listen to Obituary

John A. Altier, age 80, of Dover, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

John was born in Dover on March 23, 1946 to the late Anthony “Frip” and Margaret Putnam Altier. After graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1964, John proudly served in the United States Navy for four years at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later went on to work as a machinist for Timken, and retired in 2008 after 29 years of service to the company.

John was a member of the Elks and of St. Joe’s Catholic Church. John was an avid sports fan. Like many, he was a frustrated Cleveland Guardians fan, Notre Dame enthusiast, and a season ticket holder and supporter of Dover Football. He loved playing a round of golf, gardening, especially his prized pepper plants, and spending time with his beloved cats, Felix and Oscar.

John will be deeply missed by his wife, Jan; his son, Matthew (Emily) Altier; daughters, Tina (Ryan) Buehler and Lisa (Andrew) Hahn; grandchildren, Claire, Sophia, Ariella, and Colton; and sister, Mary (Paul) Deibel. John was also a trusted father figure to Frank (Allicen) Wott, Andrew Wott, and Kristopher Wott; and “Grandpa John” to Giovanni.

In addition to his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Toni (Dave) O’Brien preceded him in death.

Those wishing may make contributions to the Dover Boosters Club, Tusky Valley Band Boosters, or the Tusky Valley Girl’s Golf Club in John’s honor.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover, and a private service will take place at a later date. To sign an online guestbook for John, please visit the funeral home’s webpage.
