Jimmy R. Eichel

James R. “Jimmy” Eichel, 79 of Dover and formerly of New Philadelphia died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020 at the Inn at Northwood in Dover following an extended illness.

Born January 31, 1941 in Dover, he was the son of the late James R. and Evelyn (Mohn) Eichel. In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his son, James “Chip” Eichel; daughter, Kellie Eichel Shaffer, granddaughter, Cassidy Eichel, and his canine companion, Chance, his beloved black lab.

Jimmy retired as plant manager for Flex Industries. He had previously been a supervisor at Marlite. In addition, he taught at Buckeye BCC in New Philadelphia.

A graduate of the New Philadelphia High School class of 1959 where he was a football, basketball, and baseball standout, Jimmy continued his education at the University of Akron with a degree in business. A diehard Quaker fan, Jimmy served as Past President of the New Philadelphia School board, served as former past president and councilman in New Philadelphia and member of the New Phila Rotary Club and New Phila Masonic lodge. He was also quite involved in the Broadway United Methodist Church where he was a Bible Study leader. He enjoyed golfing and running and ran in several marathons.

He will be sadly missed by his family including his wife of 61 years, Karen (Green) Eichel who were married on June 13, 1959. He is also survived by a brother, John (Cheryl) Eichel and sister, Shirley Eichel both of Dover; five grandchildren, Kyle, Joey and Gaby Eichel, and Ben and Sam Shaffer; daughter in law, Teri Eichel of New Philadelphia and his niece and nephews, Lonnie and Shawn Eichel and Ashley Noretto.

At Jimmy’s request, there will be no services and cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Phila.
