James E. Lewis

James E. "Jim" Lewis, 84, of New Philadelphia and a former Dover resident died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in the Community Hospice House at New Phila following an extended illness.

Jim retired in 1988 from the Marlite Company following 42 years of service. He also did brush hog work and snow removal for both the City's of Dover and New Philadelphia.

Born March 28, 1928 in Dover, he was the son of the late Ralph "Red" and Caroline "Callie" (Gopp) Lewis.

Jim previously served as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Dover for eight years, as well as a Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Tony Young. He was a Life Member of the New Philadelphia Elks and former Dover Elks, Life Member of the Dover Moose, Life Member of the New Philadelphia VFW having served on the funeral detail and was also previously active in the 40 et 8 and Dover American Legion Post. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed gardening, camping and hunting and was a NASCAR fan.

He will be sadly missed by his family including his wife Gloria (Duper) Lewis with whom he would have celebrated 37 years of marriage this Dec. 31; three children, Kathleen (Bob) Baker of Dover, Rodney Lewis of Overton, Nevada and Sandy (Rick) Moss of Dover; two stepchildren, Bill (Seija) Brown of Galion, OH and Kim (Darrell Franklin) Murray of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren Amy Weber, Stacey Baker, Elizabeth Steel, Nathan Lewis, Andrew Moss and Adam Moss; six step grandchildren, Zachary Brown, Kalie Brown, Billy Joe Brown Jr., Benji Bushong, Patrick Murray and Jake Murray along with five great grandchildren and two expected great grandchildren; a sister, Gloria (Bill) Jones of Dover and a nephew, Tom (Annette) Jones of Dover; two aunts, Mary Gopp and Hope Gopp both of Dover.

A funeral service celebrating Jim's life will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013 beginning at 1pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastors Dode Overton and Dotty Hartzell officiating. The New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military honors immediately following the service Cremation will take place following the service and he will later be laid to rest in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Dover. Following the services, a reception will take place in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11am until the time of service.
