Jacqueline Louise (Jackie) Sherrell, age 89, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Union Hospital in Dover. Born on December 29, 1936, in New Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Major and Wilma (Walker) Houston.
Jackie was a proud graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Class of 1954. Following graduation, she attended the Tri-County School of Practical Nursing in Coshocton, where she earned her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She devoted 30 years of service to Union Hospital, where she was known for her compassionate care, dedication to her patients, and her ability to brighten the day of those entrusted to her care. Nursing was more than a profession to Jackie; it was a calling that she embraced with kindness and a servant's heart.
On March 26, 1955, Jackie married the love of her life, Rev. Robert L. "Bob" Sherrell. Together, they shared a loving marriage and a life centered on faith, family, and service to others until Bob's passing on June 10, 2015.
A faithful member of Dover's First Baptist Church, Jackie dedicated countless hours to serving her church family. She taught Sunday School, sang in the Senior Choir, played the piano, served as president of the Missionary Society, and used her creative talents to decorate the church. She also faithfully supported her husband throughout his ministry, assisting him during his years as pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Newcomerstown.
Jackie's commitment to service extended beyond her church. She served as Secretary of LPNAO Division 20 and was an active member of the Tuscarawas County Democratic Party.
Above all else, Jackie cherished her family. She treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and loved ones, creating memories that will be held close for generations. In her spare time, she enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, tending her beautiful flower gardens, and spending time outdoors among them. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith touched the lives of all who knew her.
Jackie will be remembered for her caring spirit, her devotion to her family and church, and the countless lives she impacted through her nursing career and community service. Her legacy of love, compassion, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, Bob, Jackie was preceded in death by her son, Bobby Sherrell; brother and sister-in-law, George and Naomi Houston; and her granddaughter, Amber Lanae Sherrell.
She leaves behind her daughter, Mitzi L. Sherrell; two sons, Richard L. (Bonita) Sherrell and Roderick L. Sherrell; her grandchildren, Alicia Sherrell, Ashley (Chris) Whims, Cameo Sherrell, Cayla (Michael) Ball, and Cairo Sherrell; and her great-grandchildren, Louis Dill and Gabriel, Solomon, Gideon, and Selah Whims and Priscilla and Deborah Ball; her grand-pup, Roman; along with several nieces and nephews.
