Homer G. Schwab, age 86, of Dover, passed away, Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in Dover’s New Dawn Health Care Center, following a brief illness.
Born October 17, 1935, in Port Washington, he was a son of the late Clarence and Hazel Casteel Schwab. Homer graduated from Port Washington High School in 1953, and later, on November 14, 1954, married the former Rachel Horn, who survives. He worked in the flooring business for nearly 70 years, first being employed by the late John Spiker of Dover, and ultimately purchasing the business, which became Schwab Floor and Wall Covering. Homer was also a talented carpenter and remodeler who took great pride in his work, and that work lives on in many area homes. Hard work, attention to detail and honesty were hallmarks of his life.
Homer was a member of Dover First United Methodist Church, and donated untold hours of his time to the Tuscarawas County YMCA. When he first moved to Dover as a young man, Homer did not know how to swim, and then learned to do so at the ‘Y’ in Dover. He went on to teach swimming and life-saving - which he loved doing. Homer participated in a number of search and rescue dives as well. He was a dive master and explored shipwrecks in Lake Erie. Homer also coached swim teams at the Tuscarawas YMCA. Tom Patton, the former long-time ‘Y’ director, said Homer was the winningest coach in the institution’s history.
He loved his family and time spent with them, especially his granddaughters and new great-grandson. Additionally, Homer enjoyed the outdoors, particularly deer hunting.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of nearly 68 years, Rachel; his son, Steve (Beth) Schwab of New Philadelphia; his granddaughters, Sara Bazzoli, Samantha (fiance, Jamie Ford) and Danielle Schwab; his great-grandson, Kairo Ford; and his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Homer was preceded in death by his children, William Schwab and Vicki Bazzoli; and his siblings, Clarence E. Schwab and Gladys Marie Veley.
Family and friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Monday, July 18, 10 - 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11 in the funeral home; Pastor Wesley George will officiate. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park.
