Geraldine Young

Geraldine Lynn Young (Gerrie), 83, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Park Village Dover under the care of Ohio's Hospice after a period of declining health due to Alzheimer's disease. Gerrie was born in Dover, Ohio, on November 9, 1942, to the late Eugene A. and Clementine (Tina) D. (Fioretto) Kline. A descendent of one of the earliest settlers of Tuscarawas County, Gerrie was a life-long resident of New Philadelphia.

In her youth, Gerrie enjoyed music and ballet, spending time in the record department at LaFountaine's and taking dance lessons. In 1960, she graduated from Dover St. Joseph High School. Gerrie passed her state board of Cosmetology in 1961, beginning work as a hair dresser at Town and Country Beauty Salon in New Philadelphia. She continued as a stylist for a small group of friends and family in her home salon until her retirement.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1961, Gerrie married Edward J. Young, Jr. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

A devoted Catholic, Gerrie lived her life as a true servant to God and admirer of the Blessed Mother. Gerrie was a life-long parishioner of Sacred Heart, but on weekends could be found visiting any Catholic church close to wherever she and Ed were traveling so they could attend Mass. She was a proud godmother to more than a dozen children of family and friends. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her devotion to Catholic education, her kindness, compassion, and the love she showered on all. She lived her faith to the fullest, and was a beaming example of a Christian woman.

Gerrie's service to others began as a young newlywed when she and Ed moved back into her family home to help in the care of her ailing father and her younger brother, Tom Kline.

For more than 34 years, like her mother before her, Gerrie ministered in the cafeteria at Sacred Heart School where she was assistant manager, planning menus, cooking, and treasuring her interactions with the students. At school, she was well-known for her delicious cookies and buckeyes that were sold after lunch to help raise money to keep the cafeteria operating. Often, she would personally pay for children to buy a cookie so they were not left out. Following the closure of the elementary school, she volunteered in the cafeteria at Tuscarawas Central Catholic.

Gerrie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, godmother and friend who never missed a Hallmark moment - always remembering to send a greeting card or care package for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and special occasions. She enjoyed attending the athletic events, recitals and activities of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, traveling near and far to just show up and be supportive. She also had a special fondness for former professional golfer Tom Weiskopf, sharing a birthday and birthyear with him, relishing the opportunity to follow him on the course at Firestone or Muirfield.

Since the school's inception more than five decades ago, Gerrie and Ed attended hundreds of events at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School. She was an ardent supporter of the many Saints teams, and she sported the fleur-de-lis logo everywhere - in her house, on her car and on her clothes. Her presence in the stands during TCC sporting events was legendary and will be sorely missed.

An incredible cook functioning out of her small kitchen, Gerrie loved to create her own renditions of recipes. Instinctively combining ingredients together, she rarely was able to make a dish that tasted exactly the same twice, but regardless, it was always incredible. She meticulously handled the tradition of preparing wedding soup (the meatballs couldn't be too big) and lasagna for the Fioretto family Christmas Day gatherings, and often donated soup, lasagna, pizzelles, or her special coffee cake to appreciative friends and family. Her home was always immaculately kept and adorned with her extensive collection of holiday decorations reflecting the current season.

Gerrie's homes throughout her life were always just a few blocks from Tuscora Park. She loved going to the park, a gift she shared with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren called it "Grandma's Park." Often Ed and Gerrie's daily walks included a stroll past the pond. In her later years, Gerrie enjoyed picnic dinners at the concession stand. She was very supportive of Tuscora Park's continued legacy, donating to the boardwalk and gazebo updates in recent years.

In addition to her loving husband of nearly 65 years, Gerrie is survived by her children Brian (Elizabeth) of Findlay, OH, Natalie (Nick Liberatore) of Solon, OH, and Erik of Wauconda, IL; grandchildren Kimberly Thompson (Gabe), Alexander Young (Nicole), Christopher Young, Lucas Liberatore (Jess), Benjamin Liberatore, Logan Young, Jonathan Young and Morgan Young; four great-grandchildren; her brother; brother and sisters-in-laws David and Betsy Young, Sister Helena Young, OSF, of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, Mary Jane Vajen and Barbara Young; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandchild Rebecca Young and brother-in-law Tom Young.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, 803 N. Wooster Avenue, Dover, OH. Friends may gather to visit with the family beginning at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 139 3rd Street N.E., New Philadelphia, OH. Burial will follow Mass in Calvary Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
