Eva M. Haines, age 88, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, on Friday, July 11, 2025. She is now reunited with the love of her life, Marion C. Haines Sr., whom she had missed terribly since his passing in early 2023.
Born March 25, 1937, in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Francis “Ted” and Catherine Agnes (Breehl) Hykes. Eva graduated from Midvale High School in 1955 and was employed by the former Harmon Photography Studio in Dover for nearly ten years. She married Marion on December 29, 1963, and the couple started a family and built a home in New Philadelphia. Eva later went to work for the J.C. Penney Company in downtown Dover, and then in New Philadelphia’s New Towne Mall, staying with the retail firm for 44 years, much of that time in the shoe department. Eva loved to work and would undoubtedly be at Penney’s even now if the store was still there.
In addition to her strong work ethic, Eva was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She kept an immaculate home, both inside and out. Eva loved the outdoors, especially gardening and yardwork, and this spilled over into keeping the street in front of her northwest New Philadelphia home clean and neat. It was not at all unusual to see Eva sweeping the street a few doors down or chasing the errant leaf with the blower.
Eva will be dearly missed by her children, Catherine M. (Robert) McCulloch of New Philadelphia, Barbara J. Wade of Sugarcreek, Marion C. (LeeAnn) Haines Jr. of Greenville, New York, and Gary L. (Kirsten) Haines of West Linn, Oregon; her grandchildren, Zoey and Zayn McCulloch, Dawson Wade, Alec, Gavin, Olivia and Hunter Haines; her brothers, John (Julie) Hykes of New Philadelphia, and David (Linda) Hykes of Wakeman; and her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and her beloved husband, Marion, Eva was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Hykes, and her brothers, Ted, Carl and Frank Hykes.
Eva will be cremated through the care of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Her cremated remains will be buried privately, with those of Marion, in Sacred Heart Calvary Cemetery, New Philadelphia.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Eva’s memory be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ, 409 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, Ohio 44622.
