Dr. Donald Ray "Don" Braden

August 13, 1945 — September 20, 2025

Dover, Ohio

Dr. Donald Ray “Don” Braden, age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 13, 1945, in Akron, Ohio, Don was the son of William Donald “Don” Braden and Anna Packan Braden. He was raised in a home grounded in hard work, faith, and community; values that shaped his life and legacy. A graduate of Stow High School’s Class of 1963, Don ranked among the top of his class and went on to attend The Ohio State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and was accepted into medical school, graduating with distinction in 1971, a testament to his intellect, dedication, and calling to serve others.

After completing his residency at Akron City Medical Center, Don established a medical practice in Dover, Ohio, where he cared for patients with compassion and dedication for nearly four decades. He formed lasting relationships with generations of families and became a trusted presence in the community. His service extended beyond the office walls where he was a longtime physician for the Dover High School football team, a role he cherished. His colleagues became lifelong friends, and patients often spoke of his kindness, humor, and steady presence.

In the early 1970s, Don also served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he worked at Womack Army Medical Center. His commitment to service continued long after his military years. He volunteered at the local food bank, drove for Smith Livery Service and Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, and was a faithful member and leader of Dover’s First United Methodist Church.

While attending medical school in Columbus, Don met Barbara Kaufman, his loving and devoted wife. They married on July 8, 1972, and shared 53 wonderful years together. Their marriage was a true partnership, built on love, humor, and unwavering support. Together, they raised three children who were the center of their world: Bethany Braden Weir (Aaron) of Upper Arlington, Ohio; Drew Braden (Erin) of Naperville, Illinois; and Daniel Braden (Rachel) of Silverdale, Washington.

Don embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He enjoyed racquetball, tennis, photography, whitewater rafting, and traveling. Earlier in life, he was active in soapbox derbies, Boy Scouts, and high school marching band. An enthusiastic Ohio State Buckeye fan, he was a committed father who balanced a demanding career while being fully present for his family. Those who knew him will remember his spot-on Donald Duck impersonation, quick wit, impeccable joke delivery, and playful traditions.

He was a proud and adoring grandfather to five grandchildren: Kellan Braden, Isla Braden, Ruston Braden, William Weir, and Braxton Braden, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy. His family was his greatest pride.

Don is also survived by his loving sister, Dottie Epps of Anchorage, Alaska, along with many extended family members and cherished friends who will carry his memory forward.

He will be remembered as a selfless, loyal, and generous man whose life’s work was caring for others, loving his family, and making those around him feel respected.

His final days were filled with tenderness, peace, and the quiet strength that defined his life. He will be greatly missed.
