David L. Schaar, age 86, of Dover, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.
David was born in Dover on January 30, 1940 to the late Theodore and Edna (Lahmers) Schaar. He graduated from Dover High School in 1958, and then married Jo-Ann Knecht on March 18, 1961. The couple wed in St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, where they are lifelong members, and celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage before David’s passing.
David was an avid gardener, enjoyed mowing and tending his lawn, and riding around on his gator. He and Jo-Ann loved to travel, especially to Pennsylvania and Michigan. David retired in 1998 from Greer Steel after 39 years of service to the company. He also was a truck driver for Bazzoli Trucking, and his children fondly remember rides with their dad. Following his retirement, many will remember his time spent delivering cars for Parkway. He could always be counted on for a lively conversation.
In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ashley Schaar, his daughter-in-law, Julianne Schaar, and his sister, Barbara Stien.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Jo-Ann; his children, Michael (Beth) Schaar, Linda (Gary) Miller, and Marsha (Paul) Bragg; his grandchildren, Tim (Michaela) Schaar, Allyson (Dan) Augustyn, Hailee (Cole) Lautzenheiser, Stefanie (Keagan) Chambers, Paul Bragg Jr., and Hannah Bragg; great-grandchildren, Cameron Filippi, Emerson Lautzenheiser, and Beckett Lautzenheiser; and brother, Doyle (Mary) Schaar.
Those wishing may make contributions in David’s honor to the Ohio's Hospice Truman House, located at 716 Commercial Avenue, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
Friends are invited to call on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover.
