Anthony J. "Tony" Smith

Anthony J. “Tony” Smith, age 71, of Dover, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 2, 2023 in Community Hospice Truman House, New Philadelphia.

Born May 28, 1952, in Dover, he was a son of Mary J. (Space) Smith of New Philadelphia and the late Bill J. Smith. Tony graduated from Perry High School in Massillon and was employed by  Republic Steel in Canton, from which he retired as a millwright after 20 years of service. He also worked as a skilled carpenter.

Tony grew up in the Greek Orthodox faith, attending St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Massillon, and he later became a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover. Family was very important to Tony. He was extremely proud of all of his children and loved being with them. Tony cherished his heritage, family traditions and gatherings - and he had a special bond with his cousins. Time spent with his friends was also important to Tony, and he was always up for a good laugh. Everyone knew, if you needed help getting something done, to “call Tony.” Tony also loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and attending family sporting events.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Nancy A. (Pongratz) Smith, whom he married on July 10, 1982; his children, Melissa (Brent) Stutz, Stephanie (Allan) Sayre, Katrina (Justin) Norris and Nathan A. Smith; his grandchildren, Jilaine (Greg) Butler, Ryan (Daniella) Stutz, Emily Stutz, Alec Sayre, Samantha Stutz, Jase and Joel Norris; his brother, Chris (Bobbie) Smith; and his nieces and nephews, including Ellie (James) Frengel; and his many cousins.

Tony will be cremated in accordance with his wishes. Family and friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Monday, November 6, 12 - 2 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2.  Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. 

The family extends their deep appreciation for all of the love and support everyone has shown them over the last few years.
