September 14, 1925 — August 1, 2021

Aileen E. “Betty” Teachout, age 95, of Dover, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2021, in Dover’s Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.

Born September 14, 1925, in Elmer, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Clarence E. and Rachel B. Minard Smith. Betty graduated from Sandusky (Michigan) High School in 1943, and went on to attend Tuscola County Normal School in Caro, Michigan to earn her teaching certificate. She was a public school teacher for many years, much of that time in inner city schools, and finished her career a specialized reading assistant. Betty was child-oriented and loved education. Aside from her work, she very much enjoyed home life; she was a loving wife and mother.

Betty is survived by her children, Mark Teachout of Dover, and Dawn Friend of Wilmington, North Carolina; her siblings, Deborah (Steve) Gnandt of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and Paul (Sherill) Smith of Farwell, Michigan; her several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carl R. Teachout; a sister and three brothers.

Honoring Betty’s wishes, there will be no visitation or ceremony. Her cremated remains will be placed later, with those of Carl, in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

The family suggests that contributions in Betty’s memory be made to Samaritan’s Purse, www.samaritanspurse.org, or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, www.billygraham.org.
