Walter E. Filkins

Walter E. Filkins, 86, of Dover, Ohio died Sunday, March 7, 2010 in Union Hospital following a brief illness.

Walter retired in 1988 from the U.S. Government.

Born March 14, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edmund and Flora (Detgen) Filkins.

Walter was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Dover. He also belonged to N.A.R.F.E. He was an avid fisherman and could often be found at Leesville and Clendening Lakes. He was a member of the Husky Muskie Club.

He is survived by his wife Frances (Armstrong) Filkins with whom he would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 31; He is also survived by his sister, Helen Allen of California and a brother in law, Thomas (wife, Dorothy) Armstrong of Shreve; nine nieces and nephews Thomas (Laura) Allen, Rick Allen, Christine Calvert, George (Janet) Strassburger, Celia Pang, Cindy (Tim) Larson, Diane (Doug) Thompson, Mary (Jeff) Gindlesberger, and Jim (Pam) Armstrong.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy, Pauline, and Delores.

A funeral service celebrating Walter's life will be held Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at noon in the Grace Lutheran Church at Dover with Dr. William Haggis and his nephew, Rev. Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 11am until the time of the service.
