Walter A. Moore, 93, of Strasburg passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Shady Lawn Healthcare in Dalton, Ohio.

Born on March 20, 1919, in Ava, Ohio, Walter was the son of the late George "Ollie" and Gertrude (Knott) Moore. On August 26, 1942, he married the love of his life, Lucille "Irene" Fry. The couple was married in Los Angeles, California while Walter was serving our country in the United States Army. Irene preceded him in death on September 20, 1999. During World War II, Walter spent two years in Germany where he worked in the kitchen cooking and baking. He served in the European Theater of Operation under General George S. Patton.

Walter began his career independently hauling coal, fruit, and brick. He later worked for Ava Brick Company in Ava, Ohio for many years. He retired in 1982 from Massillon Washed Gravel in Navarre.

He was a member of the Strasburg American Legion, and the New Philadelphia Veterans of America. Throughout the years, Walter and Irene traveled all over the United States. He also enjoyed gambling trips with his family. He was a backyard mechanic and loved working on many of his family, friends, and neighbors' cars.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters; Evelyn (Donald) Spiker, Randall (Gladys) Moore, Donald Moore, Roy (Glenna) Moore, Hubert (Joann, who survives) Moore, Junior Lee (Lee) Moore.

A celebration of Walter's life will take place at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 11:00 am with Pastor David Carrick officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Pleasant City where military honors will take place. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11:00.
