Vance Douglas

July 27, 1934 — May 31, 2005

Vance M. “Jay” Douglas, Jr., 70, a longtime Dover resident, died peacefully Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in Aultman Hospital.

Born July 27, 1934 at Kirtland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Vance M. and Grace Luella Carsey Douglas, Sr.

Jay was a true character. You always knew where he stood on issues, as he was more than willing to share his opinion on any number of topics. He was also famous because of his affinity for his favorite soft drink, Mountain Dew, and rarely was he ever seen without a can nearby.

Following his retirement from Marlite in 1978, Jay became a fixture on area ball fields and in gymnasiums, cheering on his beloved Dover Tornadoes. He was a longtime Dover Band Booster as well.

For more than 50 years, he was a member of the First Christian Church in Dover, where he had been a member of the adult choir and Faithful Men.

Those that know him best also know what a great cook he was. He could handle just about anything in the kitchen but will certainly be remembered most for his legendary meatloaf and cherry cheesecake.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann “Peggy” Schlafly Douglas, who died November 15, 1999.

Survivors include: his five children, Darrell Lee Douglas, Michael Allen Douglas, Julie Ann (Jeffrey) Fach, Jerry Hahn Douglas, and Jamie Eugene (Sherri) Douglas; his special nephew Travis Wray (Gretchen) McClelland; grandchildren, Jessica Douglas, Nathan Douglas, Kohl Fach, Taylor Fach, Brittany Douglas, Jennifer Douglas, Max Douglas, Michael Douglas, Zachary Douglas, and Courtney Grace Douglas; and his three sisters, Donna (Foster) McGee and Charlene Slay, and Linda (Dan) Loibl.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jay was preceded in death by siblings: Norma McClelland, Rosemary Douglas, Darrell Dean Douglas, William Lee Douglas, Max Allan Douglas, Robert Eugene Douglas, and Duane Duvella Douglas.

Jay(TM)s life will be celebrated in a ceremony held Thursday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m. in Dover(TM)s First Christian Church with Pastor Don Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Following the burial, a reception will be held in the church social hall.

Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
