Ruth Elizabeth Jones

Ruth Elizabeth Jones, 100, of 230 E. 11th St., Dover, Ohio died Saturday, February 12, 2000 in the Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville, Colorado. She was a schoolteacher having taught at the Crooked Run School, Dover Avenue School and later substituted in the Dover schools. In the early 50’s she started to work at the Dover City Hall as a service safety clerk and retired 17 years later in 1967. During that time she worked for five different service directors. Born September 3, 1899 in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Leonard J. and Elizabeth Hutzel Smith. She was a devoted member of St. John’s United Church of Christ at Dover where she was a member of the church choir for over 80 years. In appreciation for her many years in the choir, she was presented her choir robe after 70 years. She was also a member of the Anna Circle and was instrumental in starting the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet working through the Christian Endeavor organization. She was also a member of the Dover Garden Club. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. In 1991, she was named “Woman of the Year” by St. John’s UCC Women’s fellowship. On June 28, 1922, she married Herman “Corkey” Jones. He died August 2, 1952. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert “Corkey” Jones. Ruth is survived by her son, the Rev. Milton Jones and his wife Rachel of Boulder, Colorado and their children Jonathan of Silver Spring, Md. And daughters, Jacqueline and Jennifer; Timothy of Ft. Collins, Co., and his son Nathan; Rebecca Seiden and her husband Robert of Lafayette, Co., and their children Aaron, Ethan, Micaela, and Hannah; and Mary Rachel Shomaker and her husband Steven of Lafayette, Co., and their daughters, Sarah and Rachel. She is also survived by her daughter in law Carolyn (Carrico) Jones of Dover and her children, Christine Jones and husband Charles of Hermosa, South Dakota; Wendy Jones and children Erin, Emily, and Christine of Akron, Ohio; Robin Schiebel and husband Edward and their daughters Perrin and Madeline of Johnstown, OH; and Tracy Freeman and her husband, David and their children, Robert, Kathryn, and John of Wichita, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at 11:00 AM in the St. John’s United Church of Christ at Dover with Revs. Steven Daniels and Milton Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Dover. Friends can call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Friday from 5-8 PM and Saturday from 10- 11 AM at the church.
