Randall W. Maurer

Randall W. Maurer, 87, a long-time resident of Dover, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, in Union Hospital.

Born Mar. 2, 1923, in Willoughby, he was a son of the late Gilbert J. and Ritabelle V. Glading Maurer. Randall moved at a young age with his family to Tuscarawas County and was later employed by the Ohio Department of Transportation for twenty-five years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and an associate member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Randall loved to go dancing, which he did every chance he could. Some called him 'the Fred Astaire of Tuscarawas County.' Favorite dancing partners and friends were Opal Baughman of Dover and the late Ruth Hamm. Randall was also fond of going to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, he enjoyed playing Jass and was a great fan of the Cleveland Indians.

Survivors include a son, John (Bunita) Maurer of Tuscarawas; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Jesse) Sampsel of Clark, and Jacob (Jaime) Maurer of Portland, IN; seven great-grandchildren, Curt, Olivia, Garrett, Shelby, Chole, Addisen and Grace; four sisters, Norma Doutt of San Diego, CA, Wanda Hughes of Dover, Marilyn (Bob) Fronk of Columbus and Judith (Dick) Tolloti of New Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Randall was preceded in death by his former wife, Bernadine M. Shepler, and his friend and dancing partner, Ruth Hamm.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 3, at 11:30 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Dr. Steven R. Bailey of the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia officiating. There will be a private burial later in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens.
