Paul H. Groh

Paul Henry Groh, 97, of Dover passed away Thursday morning, March 3, 2005 at Park Village Health Care Center following a brief illness.

Born December 28, 1907 in Winfield, Ohio he was the son of the late William and Clara Widder Groh and his stepfather, William Byers.

On October 6, 1928, he married his beloved wife, Gertrude Ball, with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage before her passing on December 6, 1998.

Mr. Groh retired from Greer Steel Co. in 1970, completing 43 years of service. He enjoyed an active retirement, taking up golf and traveling yearly to Florida with his wife. An avid gardener, he continued to grow tomatoes as a resident of Park Village until last spring.

He was an 80 year member of Grace Lutheran Church having been an usher and member of church council for 50 years.

Mr. Groh is survived by two daughters, Carol (George) Zifer of Dover and Marjorie (Charles) Frank of Mentor; four grandchildren, Cara (Keith) Shumaker of Dover, Michael (Susan) Zifer of Louisville, Heather (Shawn) Ambrus of Mentor, and Lisa (Don) Berkemeier of Bellevue, Kentucky, and six great grandchildren, Paul Shumaker, Kylie, Maggie, & Ashley Zifer, and Tim and Thomas Berkemeier. Another great grandson is due to be born in April. He is also survived by his dear brother, Bill (Effie) Groh of New Philadelphia.

In addition to his wife and parents, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Cloyd Groh and Gary Groh and two sisters, Opal Yellin and Miriam Keller.

In his later years, Paul enjoyed eating breakfast and lunch out with his family and friends and liked to shop for groceries and visit with his many acquaintances. He also developed a fondness for many of the nurses and staff at Park Village.

Paul was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend who will be missed by all who loved him.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 7, 2005 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Dr. William Haggis officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 pm.
