Paul D. Snyder, Sr.

Paul D. Snyder, Sr., 90, of Warren, and a former resident of New Philadelphia and Sugarcreek, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 7, 2009.

Born, February 13, 1919, in Strasburg, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Nora Lab Snyder. Paul graduated from Dundee High School in 1938, and, on October 13, 1940, married the former Betty Lee McNickle in the First Lutheran Church at Strasburg. In 1944, he entered the United States Navy and served honorably during the Second World War. Following his service time, Paul was employed for twenty-five years by the Hardy Coal Co. of Sugarcreek, from which he retired in 1985. He and Betty also owned and operated the Lucky 13 Ceramics Shop in Sugarcreek for seventeen years.

Paul was a member of the Christian Temple in Uhrichsville, and had been an active member of the Lutheran Church for many years. He was also a former member of the Sugarcreek Business Association and the Sugarcreek post of the American Legion.

Paul was a very kind-hearted person who touched the lives of all who knew him. He enjoyed life, easily shared a laugh or joke, and his presence will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of nearly sixty-nine years, Betty; three sons, Paul “Dan” Snyder, Jr., of Winfield, West Virginia, Gary (Sue) Snyder of Warrior, Alabama, and William G. “Bill” (Marcia) Snyder of North Canton; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Cinda K. Snyder; four sisters, Gladys Flickinger, Hannah Jenei, Ethel Leighley and Elsie Margo; and by five brothers, Carl, Russell, Donald, Warren and Charles Snyder.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 803 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, with Pastors Larry and Janie Hostetler officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover, where the Dover post of the V.F.W. will provide military honors. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Christian Temple.
