Mary Virginia Erwin

Mary Virginia Erwin, age 90, of Dover, died Wednesday, Mar. 18, 2009, following a brief illness.

Born, Dec. 13, 1918, in Massillon, she was a daughter of the late Milliard and A. Blanche Pickens McCombs. Mary graduated from Dover High School in 1936, and, during the Second World War, was employed by the Reeves Steel Co. at Dover, and the Berger Division of Republic Steel Aero at Canton. In later years, she was the co-owner of Meg's Ceramic Shop at Dover.

Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Dover, and the United Methodist Women and Lois Circle of the church. She also belonged to the Dover V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Ladies of the Moose, Pythian Sisters, the Tuscarawas Valley Chapter of the A.A.R.P. and the A.H. Bridge Club.

Survivors include a son, Michael E. (wife, Carla) Erwin of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Michele A. (husband, Ian) Erwin-Kirkwood of Norwood, CO; grandson, John R. (friend, Melissa Smart) Erwin of New Philadelphia; a great-granddaughter, Grace Erwin-Kirkwood, expected in May; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of forty-one years, Russell E. Erwin, on May 15, 1981; an infant daughter, Bonnie; two sisters, Dorothy Butler and Eleanor Gribble; and by three brothers, Donald, Emmett and Max McCombs.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Mar. 20, at 1:30 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor Bruce McLaughlin officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the First United Methodist Church, Dover.
