Martha L. Gee

February 4, 1923 — March 11, 2013

Martha Lois Glidden Gee, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, March 11, 2013, in New Dawn Health Care Center after a brief illness. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday.

Martha was born on February 4, 1923, to Frank N. and Sarah Eva Smallwood Glidden in Ava, Ohio. She graduated from Belle Valley High School, and shortly thereafter met Harold E. Gee. The couple were wed on May 24, 1924 and shared 57 years together. In 1942, their eldest son James M. Gee was born, and Nathan Lynn Gee followed five years later. Martha was a career woman, which was a little out of the ordinary for her time. She was employed by Alsco in Sugarcreek, then took a position with the W.T. Grant Co., Dover, and concluded her career as bookkeeper and assistant to Mr. Eiler at Eiler's Appliances, also in Dover.

Martha loved to travel. She made yearly trips to California to visit her Aunt Emma and also often visited the Caribbean islands. She and Harold also traveled throughout the U.S. after their retirement. However, their favorite past time was square dancing, which they did several times a week. Martha also loved gardening and had a very green thumb.

She is survived by her son, Nathan Lynn (Linda) Gee of New Philadelphia; her granddaughters, Danielle Gee Lieser of Dover, and Michelle (Knisely) Sturiale of California; her grandsons, Nathan Lynn Gee II and Michael Knisely, both of New Philadelphia, and Bill Knisely of Dover; as well as her great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Harold; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Martha Ann Gee; her grandsons, Christopher and Joshua Gee; her great-grandson, Jory Loibl; and her siblings, Melba Widder and Bill and Wylie Glidden.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Wednesday, Mar. 13, 5:30-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Mar. 14, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Dr. Steven R. Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
