Lloyd W. Crowell, Sr.

March 7, 1920 — June 5, 2005

Lloyd W. Crowell, Sr., 85, a Dover resident for more than fifty years, died peacefully Sunday, June 5, 2005 in Union Hospital following a brief illness.

Born March 7, 1920 at Hohenwald, TN, he was the son of the late Ode & Esther Hooper Crowell.

Lloyd possessed an incredible work ethic. In 1982, he retired from the B&O Railroad after spending 38 years working as a car inspector. For 25 of those years, he was also the owner/operator of the former Dover Amoco Station. All the while, he made sure there was always enough time for family, church, and spending time gardening and working in his yard.

Later in life, his leisure time was consumed by his desire to spend as much time as possible with his grandkids. Whether it was just a quick visit or getting them altogether for a getaway trip to a favorite spot " it didn(TM)t get any better than the joy he felt from being with them.

He was a longtime member of New Philadelphia(TM)s Church of Christ, and had honorably served his country in the Army during World War II.

On May 3, 1941, Lloyd wed his sweetheart for the past 64 years, the former Ruth K. Gooch, who survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Lloyd W. (Susan) Crowell, Jr. of New Phila., Tom O. (Toni) Crowell of Dover, Jim L. (Dianne) Crowell of Dover and Harry L. (Donna) Crowell of New Phila.; eleven grandchildren, Shannon Crowell of New Phila., Melissa Crowell of Beach City, Julie Whyel of Wooster, Michelle Ash of New Phila., Melanie Crowell of New Phila., Mathew Crowell of New Phila., Chris Crowell of New Phila., Jamie Steiner of Ragersville, Courtney DiGenova of Dover, Jim E. Crowell of New Phila., and Stacey German of New Philadelphia; eight great grandchildren, Nick & Chelsea Specht of Dover, Chevy Ash of New Phila, Kaylee Rubright of New Phila, Brynn Whyel of Wooster, Madison & Mason Steiner of Ragersville, and Brooklyn Crowell; a sister, Jean Gillispie of TN; sister-in-law, Lillie Gooch and nephew Arlie Gooch, Jr. both of Dover.

In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by four sisters.

In celebration of his life, a funeral ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 8, at 11:00 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover with his pastor, Tim Hatfield officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Friends may call in the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m.

Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Lloyd by visiting the “obituaries” link on the funeral home(TM)s website.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the Church of Christ, 749 Commercial Avenue SW, New Phila., 44663.
