Lida Carmack Bowers

Lida Carmack Bowers (Mrs. Eugene L.), age 80, of 814 Race Street, Dover, Ohio died at home on May 6, 2000. Daughter of the late Birney L. and Grace Bell Carmack, she was born on September 28, 1919, along with her twin brother, the late George J. Carmack, at Pleasant Valley, east of Dennison, Ohio.

Valedictorian of the Uhrichsville High School Class of 1937, she also completed the teacher’s program at Muskingum College and attended the Ohio State University and Kent State University.

Lida was a former teacher in Tuscarawas County School System, the Uhrichsville City Schools, and a former substitute teacher for Dover City Schools.

Married October 24, 1942, to the late Eugene Liggett Bowers, she is survived by their three children, their spouses, and nine grandchildren. Their children are: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Grace) Mason of Columbus, Dr. and Mrs. Carey (Sally) Girgis of Westerville, and Mrs. and Mrs. Ralph (Kathy) Bowers of Cambridge. Their grandchildren are: Matthew and Jeanie Mason of Columbus, Jennifer Mason of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, John, Suzanne, Sarah, and James Girgis of Westerville, Mark Bowers of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jeffrey Bowers of Cambridge. In addition to her husband, parents, and brother, George, she was also preceded in death by her older brother, Ralph E. Carmack of Uhrichsville.

A member of the Dover First United Methodist Church, she served in various positions, including teacher and pianist in the children’s department. She was a member of the Women’s Literary Club of Dover, and a life member of the Ohio State P.T.A.. She served as president of the former Sixth Street Elementary PTA, Dover High School PTA, and Dover PTA Council. From 1973-1994, she and her husband, Eugene, owned and operated Bowers Appraisal Service of Dover.

Private services will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover with close family friend, Mr. Victor Lee, and Rev. Joe Glassner of the Dover First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Uhrichsville. No public calling hours will be held.
