Laverne W. ''Flip'' King

LaVerne W. “Flip” King, 72, of Dover, Ohio died Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Aultman Hospital following an extended illness.

He retired on January 1, 1988 from the East Ohio Gas Company where he worked for 38 years. During his employment, he was the Office Mgr. Of the Dover-New Philadelphia District, Division Credit Mgr. Of East Ohio in Akron, Manager of Customer Information Center in Akron, and the Division Marketing Representative in Akron.

Born March 26, 1930 in Killbuck, Ohio, he was the son of Nina L. Cline King of New Philadelphia and the late Forrest James King.

Vern was a member of the St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ in Dover where he served two terms as Secretary and two terms as Asst. Treasurer of the church council. He was also a member of the church bocce league. He is also a member of the Dover Elks Lodge and its golf league, member of the Buckeye Chrysler Products Club, National Chapter of the Chrysler Products Club, Korean War Veterans Assn., and the East Ohio Gas Company 25 year Club.

He was a Founding Member of the Dover Minor Baseball League where he served as Treasurer. He also formerly served as Secretary �" Treasurer of the Commercial Bowling League and the Dover Elks Bowling League and the Asst. Secretary Treasurer of the Dover �" NP Bowling Association. He was also a Past Member of the Dover Lions Club and Past President and former member of the Dover Rotary Club.

He served for four years on the Dover Board of Education and was President of the Board in 1976. He also served on the Buckeye JVS School Board and served on the original board during the building of JVS.

He was a 1948 Graduate of New Philadelphia High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed showing his 1948 Plymouth Club Coupe at many car shows where he received many trophies. He loved being with his family and was an avid golfer and loved refinishing furniture.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Mary Louise Mercer King with whom he would have celebrated his 51 anniversary on Monday (yesterday). He is also survived by two daughters; Lesli (Harry W.) Humphries of New Philadelphia and Marcia J. (Joe) Lukens of New Philadelphia; one grandson, Matthew (Kelly) Lautzenheiser of Berea; Two stepgrandchildren; Miranda Jo Lukens and Mary Lukens both of New Philadelphia and a sister, Marlene (Jay) Peterson of New Philadelphia.

Vern was preceded in death by two grandchildren Kimberly J. Lautzenheiser and Douglas R. Lautzenheiser.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 1:30 pm in the St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ in Dover with Rev. Steve Daniels officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm where Elks Services will be at 6:45 pm.
