Kenneth G. Beitzel

October 19, 1930 — July 23, 2007

The City of Dover has lost one of its most beloved and well-respected community figures with the passing of Ken Beitzel on Monday, July 23, 2007 at Union Hospital.

Born October 19, 1930 in Dover he was a son of the late Carl and Hilda Roth Beitzel. He was also preceded in death by his brother Robert Beitzel.

Ken started his working career, following the completion of his military service, at J.A. Raeder Construction where he worked for 37 years. He then owned and operated Beitzel Cement and Masonry Company for 10 years, and finally Ken retired in October 2005 from the City of Dover as the Building Inspector after 10 years of service.

He was a life member of St. John(TM)s United Church of Christ at Dover where he served the church in many capacities. He was also a member of the Dover Elks, VFW, 40 et 8 Club, and the Dover Kiwanis having been elected president twice and he also served on the board of Habitat for Humanity. Ken was active with Troop 86 of the Boy Scouts and was honored with the Eagle Scout Award and most recently was a recipient of the Bernie Myers Award for his life long work in scouting. He was a 1948 graduate of Dover High School where he was also the captain of the football team, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War having served in the Pacific aboard the USS Philippines. But most of all Kenny loved his family and really enjoyed his retirement years traveling with Joyce and being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Joyce McKinney Beitzel with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage on March 10, 2007.

He is also survived by his children, Jeff (Shelly) Beitzel of Dover, Polly (John) Anich of Mansfield and Jennifer (Joe) Provenzano of Dublin; grandchildren, Blake and Lee Beitzel, Sarah and Emily Anich, Mia and Matty Provenzano; sisters, Audrey (Paul) Harmon of Dover and Ruth Gribben also of Dover; and mother in law, Jeanne McKinney.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 11:00 am in the St. John(TM)s United Church of Christ at Dover with Rev. Michael Lowry officiating. Interment will be at the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover on Wednesday from 1-3 and 6-8 pm.
