John E. Masten

John E. Masten, 83, of Sherrodsville died at his home on Friday, March 24, 2006.

He retired from Local #109 Plaster and Cement Masons Union in Akron after 50 years of service.

Born July 29, 1922 in Liverpool, West Virginia he was a son of the late James and Margaret Rake Masten.

He was a member of the Roxford United Methodist Church in Dennison, Ohio Big Bucks Club and was a WW II Navy veteran. John was an avid hunter who also enjoyed taking care of his garden. He was always active, especially following his retirement when he would help his son on the farm that they shared. He also enjoyed reading and watching baseball.

John is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Rosemary Mace Masten who he married on May 31, 1946.

He is also survived by five sons, Stephen (Marilyn) Masten of Dennison, David (Ann) Matsel of Lee Summit, Missouri, Gary (Collette) Masten of North Canton, Wayne Matsel of Dennison and Jeffrey Masten of Uhrichsville; four daughters, Jean Wagner of Tucson, Arizona, Barbara (Ray) Bogart of Salem, North Carolina, Becky (Paul) Beitzel of New Philadelphia and Connie (Tom) Belnap of New Philadelphia; three foster children, Joe, Lisa and Chris Waller; sister, Marie (Russell) Alton of Parkersburg, West Virginia; 35 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Rollins, Mildred Mace and an infant sister; brother, Harry Masten; foster child, Bobby Waller and a foster granddaughter, Missy Driml.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Roxford United Methodist Church at Dennison with Dr. Joel Atkins officiating. Interment will be in the Roxford United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at 246 East High Ave. New Philadelphia on Tuesday from 5-8 pm.
