James W. Adams

December 3, 1928 — June 19, 2009

James W. "Jim" Adams, 80, of Dover, died Friday, June 19, 2009, in Union Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born, December 3, 1928, in Little Hocking, he was a son of the late Oliver F. and Mildred L. Clark Adams. Jim attended school in Cadiz and then served honorably in the United States Army just following the Second World War. A hard-worker, Jim retired from Empire-Detroit following twenty-five years of service; he also was employed by Frownfelter's I.G.A. at New Philadelphia, farmed at Bakersville, and operated a metal detector sales business, Adams Detector Sales.

Jim was fond of the outdoors and camping, and spent many happy hours searching for, and finding, all sorts of "treasure" with his metal detector. He was the proud owner of a trophy-winning 1947 Dodge pick-up truck, and enjoyed going to car shows, which he sometimes organized. Jim also liked to work with wood, crafting cradles, rocking chairs, log cabin jewelry boxes and many other items for family and friends.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Dover, the Dover post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Buckeye Treasure Hunters, Ohio Happy Treasure Hunters and the Silver Seekers Treasure Hunters clubs, as well as several area camping clubs. Also, in his younger days, Jim served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America in the Bakersville area.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Miller Schaar Adams, whom he married on June 13, 1981 in Dover; two daughters, Beverly (Richard) Fisher of Winfield, and Cheryl (Steven) Reiger of New Philadelphia; a son, Dean (Deborah) Adams of Grove City; step-daughter, Tracy L. Schaar of Canton; step-son, Scott A. Schaar of Pataskala; grandchildren, Matt and Jenny Fisher, Nick Johnson, Lynn Adams, Morgan Reiger, Avery, Claudia and Jessa Schaar; and a sister, Margaret Miller Fernandez.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Lucy Carol Arter Adams, and a brother, Francis Lloyd Adams, preceded Jim in death.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Chris Mulpas officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover, where the Dover V.F.W will perform military rites. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the First Christian Church.
