Jack L. Griffin

July 21, 1934 — June 1, 2022

Jack L. Griffin, age 87, of Dover, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Born July 21, 1934, in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late Clarence C. and Harriet McMasters Griffin. Jack graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1952, and served in the United States Army Reserve as part of the Railway Operating Battalion. Jack married the former Loretta F. Weaver on August 28, 1953; the couple shared 58 years of marriage prior to Loretta’s passing on December 9, 2011. He was employed by the City of Dover Police Department in 1959, and served the department as Chief of Police from 1973 until his retirement in 1985. Following his time with the police department, he went to work for Buehler’s in Dover, in maintenance, where he was employed for some 25 years. Jack was dedicated, honorable, kind and always maintained a good sense of humor.

He was a former member of the Dover Foursquare Gospel Church, and attended the Church at Carter’s Orchard in Dover. Additionally, Jack belonged to Tuscora Lodge No. 4 of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, of which he served as president. Jack enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the Cleveland Browns, Indians/Guardians and Cavaliers, as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes. He had two big-screen TVs in his living room which he nearly always watched simultaneously.

Jack will be dearly missed by his son, Jon Michael “Mike” (Roxanne) Griffin of Dover; his grandson, Nathan Michael (Katie) Griffin, also of Dover; his great-grandsons, Kaladin Michael and Rowan Victor Griffin; his sisters-in-law, Shirley Griffin of Uhrichsville, Lillian Kennedy of New Philadelphia, and Marguerite “Peggy” de Mello of Florida; his brother-in-law, Gene Weaver of Westerville; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Eve Weaver of Florida; his many nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Bob Everett, whom Jack mentored from the age of 14.

Besides his parents, and his wife, Loretta, Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Jean Weaver, and his brother, Edward E. Griffin Sr.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Church at Carter’s Orchard, 2201 Progress St., Dover, on Sunday, June 5, 2 - 5 p.m., with F.O.P. services being conducted at 4:45. A funeral service will be held in the church on Monday, June 6, at 11 a.m.; Jack’s friend, Pastor David Wing, will officiate. Directly afterward, there will be a lunch in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
