Helen Marie Shaffer

Helen Marie Shaffer, 78, of Dover passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Aultman Hospital with her family by her side.

Born in Alliance, on November 20, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Ethel Benedum McGowan. Helen graduated from Alliance High School in 1948. She later married the love of her life, Guy G. Shaffer, on April 3, 1952. Together they had two children.

She was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple. Her family was very important to her, and her life revolved around them. She very much enjoyed cooking and baking in her kitchen, as well as family vacations.

In addition to her husband, Guy, she will be sadly missed by her son; Gregory (Melissa) Shaffer of Strongsville; her daughter, Pam (David) Elliott of North Canton; two sisters, Zetta (Robert) Smith of Massillon, and Ellen (Quentin) Durell of Alliance; two brothers, William (Judy) McGowan of Strongsville, and Charles (Ann) McGowan of Virginia; and her five grandchildren; Joshua Shaffer of Chicago, Julianne and Jamie Shaffer both of Strongsville, Andrew (Cassie) Elliott of Massillon, and Megan Elliott of North Canton.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert McGown, and her sister, Mary E. Pew.

In keeping with Helen's wishes, she will be cremated, and a memorial service held Friday, November 13, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover with Rev. David Harmon officiating. Helen's urn will be placed in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Dover Burial Park.
