Harry J. West, 91, a longtime Strasburg, Ohio resident died Saturday, October 22, 2016 in the Hennis Care Centre at Bolivar following an extended illness.

Harry retired in 1990 as a product specialist for Stambaugh-Thompson Hardware in Canton following 18 years of service.

Born March 10, 1925 in Pennsboro, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Cary S. and Ola B. (Carr) West.

He was an active member of the Bolivar Wesleyan Church where he served as a former trustee and member of the Best Years Fellowship Group. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a combat engineer. He was a member of the Charles Hofer Post of the American Legion in Strasburg. Harry loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at his cabin in West Virginia. What brought him the most joy was spending time with his family including his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 70 years, Anna M. (Cottrill) West with whom he married on July 10, 1945. She died on June 17, 2015.

He will be sadly missed by his family including his two children, Randy (Chris) West of Port Washington and Suzanne (Bob) Black of Strasburg; four grandchildren, Troy (Renee) West of Dover, Tiffany West of Providence, R.I., Zachary (Faith) Black of Navarre and Abbey (Sam) Hutchison of Strasburg; six great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Brock West, Carter Black, Danny Gardner, and Cole and Caden Hutchison along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2016 beginning at 11:30am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor Steve Gerig officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Strasburg American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 10 until the time of service. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2:30pm in the Ellenboro Masonic Cemetery in Ellenboro, West Virginia.
