Florence N. "Granny" Baumgardner

October 17, 1927 — December 11, 2020

Florence N. “Granny” Baumgardner, 93, of Bolivar passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at the Inn at Northwood following a brief battle with Covid-19.

She was born on October 17, 1927 in Bolivar and was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Freitag Tomer. Florence was also preceded in death by her husband, George “Fluffy” Baumgardner on November 13, 1993; three brothers; one sister; three great grandchildren and her special companion, Izzy.

During her childhood, she attended a one room school house not far from her home. Following her marriage, she and George operated a dairy farm for 20 years. It was her time on the farm where she developed a passion for gardening, and was well known for raising her delicious sweet corn. Florence sold her corn at the Dover Farmers Market until her health forced her to retire, a hobby that lasted more than 50 years. She also loved cooking and baking cookies at Christmas time for her family and friends. She was a dedicated life member, and past president, of the Ft. Laurens American Legion Auxiliary, past president and secretary-treasurer of the Tuscarawas County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary, and past president and member of the Dover Drum and Bugle Corps Auxiliary. During her time with the American Legion she visited many of the VA Hospitals in the state, always honoring her husband’s service during WW II.
Florence is survived by her daughters, Nancy Jean (Wayne) Bricker, Mary Ann (Gerald) Kendle of Mineral City; son, George Jr. (Mary) Baumgardner both of Bolivar; grandchildren, Tonya (Matt) Troup, Tana (Steve) Martin, Bucki (Jodi) Kendle, Todd (Chris) Kendle, Shannon (Mike) Domer, Chris Baumgardner; 12 great grandchildren; special friends, Mark Cush and Selvige Warner and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in the Ft. Laurens Cemetery at Bolivar. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover is handling arrangements. Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Florence may do so by visiting the online obituaries link on the funeral home’s website.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Inn at Northwood for their wonderful care shown towards Florence the past two years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bolivar Fire Department at 456 Water St SW, Bolivar, OH 44612.
