Edgar L. Dill

Edgar L. Dill, 88, of Dover, died Thursday, Mar. 4, 2004, in Union Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1916, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, he was a son of Robert and Florence Mathis Dill. When his father died, Edgar was in the eighth grade and had to drop out of school, but returned later to complete the necessary coursework and earn his diploma. During World War II, Edgar served with the Army Air Corps. At that time, he met and married his wife, the former Katherine Kline of Dover, who was also in the Army Air Corps. In 1946, the couple moved to Dover, where Edgar was employed by the former Dover Daily Reporter and later by The Times-Reporter. He retired in 1981.

Edgar was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Dover, and taught Sunday school there. He was a life member of the Dover Elks Lodge, where he served as Exalted Ruler. He also served the Elks as a District Deputy. Edgar was a member of the American Legion. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 85, sponsored by Grace Lutheran.

Edgar excelled in football as a youth in South Carolina, and this interest followed him to Dover. He was a staunch supporter of the Dover Tornadoes, holding season tickets, and missing only a few Dover �" New Philadelphia games.

Survivors include two sons, Collier (Nancy) Dill of New Philadelphia, and Tom (Kathy) Dill of Columbus; a daughter, Marcia (Stan) Bashore of Las Vegas, NV; two grandchildren, Sara (Jeff) Ruffner of Cincinnati, and Joe Dill of New Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews, including Bobby (Helen) Deas and Harriet Dill, both of Rock Hill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Katherine, in 2002; they were married fifty-eight years. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Wilburn Dill, and two sisters, Fontella Deas and Ovinia Carter.

A funeral service celebrating Edgar�(TM)s life will be held Monday, Mar. 8, at 10:30 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover. Pastor Lee Eilert will officiate. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park, where military rites will be conducted by the Dover post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Following the committal, there will be a reception in Grace Lutheran Church.
