Earl D. Rimer

Earl D. Rimer, 95, of Dover, died early Saturday morning, May 12, 2007 in Union Hospital.

The son of the late Earl A. & Bessie Swope Rimer, he was born May 30, 1911 at Dresden, Ohio.

After his graduation from Dover High School, Earl honorably served his country during World War II. While in the Army, he was stationed overseas and worked as a radio operator. During the 1940�(TM)s and 50�(TM)s, he operated a popular grocery store in Dover, the former East Front Street Market. Following his successful operation of the grocery, Earl opened Rimer�(TM)s Hardware in Orrville, which was a fixture in Wayne County for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia, and had also been affiliated with the Dover VFW, and the Orrville American Legion. Early in his life, he was an avid fisherman who enjoyed traveling to favorite fishing spots, including Lake Erie, and had taken pride in his fishing boat. In his later years, Earl was introduced to the game of golf, which, as it does for so many, became an instant favorite.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Connie Contini Rimer, who died April 14, 1981, and his second wife, Mary Ann Rimer, who died March 6, 2005, preceded him in death. Two brothers, Albert and a Robert, and a sister, Mildred, also preceded him in death.

Earl is survived by: a son, Thomas Rimer; and daughter, Kathleen “Kathy” (Jim) Wehrkamp, both of Homosassa, FL; two grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Glenna) Rimer of Dover; sister, Francis “Martha” Sweeney of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Dab) Cardani of Dover.

A funeral service celebrating Earl�(TM)s life will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, New Philadelphia, with Rev. Richard Greenwood officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover, and a meal for friends and family will immediately follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 East High Ave., New Philadelphia, on Monday from 7-9 p.m.
