Dr. Clifford L. Schrader

Dr. Clifford L. Schrader, 63, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died Monday, January 29, 2001 in his home following a brief illness.

Dr. Schrader was an Asst. Professor of Chemistry at the University of Akron. He was teaching Honors Chemistry. He was previously the Science Supervisor for the Summit County Educational Service Center in Akron and longtime Chemistry teacher at Dover High School. He also previously taught in Indiana.

Born April 16, 1937 in Batesville, Indiana, he was the son of Ethel Haessig Schrader of Batesville, Indiana and the late Errett Schrader.

Dr. Schrader has authored over 23 publications including a chemistry textbook, “Heath Chemistry” used by numerous high schools. He was currently writing a course for the University of Akron entitled “Chemistry for Everyone” a course designed for non Chemistry majors. He was the Program Manager of the Hazardous Waste Removal Program for the Ohio Dept. of Education (a program to remove all hazardous wastes from science labs in all high schools in the state of Ohio.)

He was a Past President and member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Akron Chapter. He was the Ohio Representative for Teachers in Space in 1985. He served as Past President of the Science Education Council of Ohio. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D degrees from Purdue University where he served as a graduate teaching assistant in 1969-70. Some of his awards and honors include the Fulbright Scholar in 1965, Jaycee Outstanding Young Educator in 1967, Shell Merit Fellow in 1968, Acker Outstanding Teacher in 1979, Fellow Ohio Academy of Science, Dreyfus Master Teacher, Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 1984 and the Kiwanis Outstanding Teacher in 1985. He also received the Dover Education Assn. Excellence in Teaching Award, John Vaughn Award for Excellence in Education, American Chemical Society Regional and James Bryant Conant Awards, and the Ashland Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

He formerly served as Adjunct Professor at Kent State and Ashland Universities. In addition to his writing, he has made numerous presentations in the U.S., Brazil, Canada and USSR.

Other memberships include DivChed Safety Committee, Division of Safety and Health, National Science Teachers Assn., Sigma Pi Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa, Ohio Academy of Science, and Assn. Of Presidential Awardees in Science Teaching where he served as President from 1986-89. He also served on the Ohio Dept. of Education Advisory Committee from 1987-89. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Dover.He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing golf.

In addition to his mother, Cliff is survived by his wife, Martha Solon Schrader with whom he would have celebrated 41 years of marriage on August 20.


Two daughters and one son, Pam (Jack) Reising of Seattle, Washington, Paul of New Haven, Connecticut, and Emily Schrader of the home.

Three brothers Errett Schrader of Marion, Indiana Eugene and William Schrader both of Batesville, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie.

At Cliff�(TM)s request, cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3 at 11:00 AM in the First United Methodist Church at Dover with Dr. David Oliver officiating. The Schrader family will receive friends and associates of Cliff on Friday from 5-8 pm in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 831 Boulevard, Dover.
