Dorothea Alice Schupbach

Dorothea Alice Schupbach, 85, of Dover, died Monday, Mar. 31, 2008, in her home.

Born, Nov. 24, 1922, in East Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Verda Edwards Jones. The family moved to Strasburg when Dorothea was a young girl. Dorothea's mother died in 1934, and her father, the Strasburg Marshal, was killed in an accident in 1941. Dorothea attended school in Strasburg, and then went to work at the Timken Co. canteen. As a young wife and mother, she took in washing and ironing, and cared for the children of others.

In 1962, Dorothea began work for Delmar Espenschied at the former Espy's in Dover. She was a cook and made soup, starting her day at 5 a.m. When Espy's changed hands, Dorothea stayed on working for Ron and Marge Limbacher, ultimately retiring in 2002, after forty years of service. She would have stayed longer, had arthritis in her knees not hampered her ability to stand. In her retirement Dorothea would visit the tavern nearly every morning for coffee. She always had a sunny disposition and a smile, and had friends both young and old. Everyone who knew her loved her.

Dorothea loved spending time with her large family, and if there was an occasion to celebrate it was all the better. She enjoyed watching both the Cleveland Indians and the Browns on television her favorite quarterback was Bernie Cosar, and she had her picture taken with him. Of course, she always cheered-on "those Strasburg Tigers."

Survivors include two sons, Stanley (Brenda) Schupbach of Dover, and Larry (Jill) Schupbach of Lawrenceville, GA; a daughter, Rebecca (Lloyd Jr.) May of Dover; nine grandchildren, Theresa (Jim Rentfrow) Landis of Dundee, Tina (Larry Taylor) Schupbach of Stone Creek, Kim Maddox of Grayson, GA, Larry (Beth) Schupbach of Tucker, GA, Jody (Michelle) May of Dover, Heather (Mark) Root of Dover, Greg (Karen) Jarvis of Strasburg, Scott (Debbie) Jarvis of Dover, and Tricia Bitikofer of New Philadelphia; twenty great-grandchildren, Carla, Aaron, Dale, Bryce, Zane, Mercer, Camden, Michael, Michelle, Meghan, Marcus, Samantha, Clayton, Raven, Katie, Matthew, Chase, Riley, Gage and Logan; three great-great-grandchildren; and best friend, Irene Lambros of New Philadelphia.

In addition to her parents, Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband of twenty-seven years, Victor W. Schupbach, in 1978; a great-granddaughter, April; two brothers, Ralph (who died in India while in the service of his country) and Veryle Jones; and a sister, Idella Shetler.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Thursday (today), Apr. 3, 5-8 p.m., with a Christian wake service being held at 7:45 p.m. A funeral service will be held Friday, Apr. 4, at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Deacon Ron Fondriest of St. Joseph Church in Dover officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dover. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
