Donald W. Mastin M.D.

Donald W. Mastin, M.D., 88, of Dover, Ohio died Thursday, February 19, 2009 in Union Hospital following a brief illness.

Dr. Mastin began his practice at Dover in 1953 where he joined Dr. Joseph Hamilton. He later practiced medicine in a shared office with Dr. Philip Doughten on Wabash Avenue in New Philadelphia. He served on the Union Hospital Medical Staff for forty years from 1953-93 with privileges in general practice and anesthesia. He chaired the Department of Pediatrics in 1959, 1960, 1963, and 1964 and the Department of Anesthesia from 1965-1969, 1974, and 1983-1988. Mastin served as Medical Staff President in 1968. In 1993, he became an honorary member of the medical staff. His greatest joy was taking care of his patients and remembering their families.

Dr. Mastin was born January 10, 1921 in New Castle, Indiana, the son of the late Tom and Minnie Mastin.

After graduating from high school at New Castle, he received his undergraduate degree from Wabash College in Indiana in 1947. He received his Doctorate degree in medicine from Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1952. He served his internship at Cleveland City Hospital.

Dr. Mastin served in the U.S. Army AirCorp during World War II where he was a fighter pilot flying P51 Mustangs in the 8th Air Force. He flew in 21 combat missions over Germany as a high altitude escort for B24 bombers. He was discharged in 1945 as a 1st lieutenant. During his service, he was awarded an AIR medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster.

Dr. Mastin was a longtime member of Union Country Club. He enjoyed sports and was an avid tennis player where he could be often seen at Tuscora Park and also enjoyed golfing. He was a serious bicycle enthusiast and when in his sixties, he traveled across Europe and once rode from Dover to Toronto, Canada.

He is survived by three sons, Atty. Scott Mastin and his companion, Angela Black and Steve (wife, Becky) Mastin all of Dover, and Jim (wife, Cathy) Mastin of Mansfield; one daughter, Donna Mastin of Westerville; six grandchildren, Emily (husband, Chris) Lane of Dover, Abigail Mastin of Columbus, Gabriel Mastin of Mansfield, Joy (husband, Nick) Granter of North Carolina, Daniel Mastin of Mansfield and Jedediah Mastin of Mansfield; two great grandchildren Lucas and Elizabeth Lane of Dover; two sisters, Charlotte Walker of New Castle and Imogene Llewelyn of Apple Valley, California.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Luke Mastin, two brothers Tom and Floyd Mastin and a sister, Ethel Mastin.

He will be cremated.

A celebration of Donald's life will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 4pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Rev. Allen Bergmann officiating. Military honors will follow the service by the Dover VFW. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2-4pm.
