Donald D. Konowal

Donald D. “Don” Konowal, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, in Union Hospital, Dover.

Born, Jan. 30, 1921, in Lorain, he was a son of the late Matthew and Mary Ann Thoman Konowal.
Don graduated from Lorain High School and went on to serve honorably with the United States Navy Seabees during the Second World War. His service time took him to the Marshall Islands in the Pacific where he built structures in connection with the testing of atomic bombs. Don enjoyed working with wood all of his life; he was a carpenter who worked in home construction, and later, with the State of Ohio in restoration of historical sites such as Schoenbrunn, Zoar Village and Fort Laurens. Don also participated in the building of Atwood Terrace Apartments in New Philadelphia.

In addition to his carpentry work, Don enjoyed growing and tending apple and walnut trees, and fishing on Lake Erie. He was a member of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Don is survived by a daughter, Donna (husband, Richard) Smart of New Philadelphia; two sons, David Konowal of Beloit, WI, and Douglas (wife, Ann) Konowal of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Jason (wife, Laura) Miller of Independence, Richele (husband, Eric) Angstadt, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Beaufort, SC, and Jim Smart, serving with the Marine Corps in Iraq; one great-grandchild, Taylor Ruth Angstadt; sisters-in-law, Isabelle Konowal of Lorain and Josephine Konowal of Indiana; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty-nine years, Laverne Nevins Konowal, in 1994; a brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Irene Konowal; brothers, Robert and Leonard Konowal; and sisters, Sophie Braun, Lorraine Stang and Marge Furdyn.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Dr. Steven R. Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover, where the V.F.W. will conduct military rites. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
